When “coins don’t move,” what are we really measuring?

HODL waves bucket supply by age since last movement. Long-term holder metrics summarise coins statistically unlikely to be day-trading inventory. Neither metric predicts next month — they describe stock behaviour, not flow urgency.

Age bands, not mind-reading

A coin that hasn’t moved in 12 months might be lost, cold-stored, or patiently held. Dashboards apply heuristics; heuristics can drift in edge cases (custody sweeps, coin joins). Treat spikes as hypotheses.

Why LTH supply ATHs get attention

When a large share of supply sits with long-dated holders, markets sometimes interpret that as reduced near-term sell pressure. Historically, major regime changes coincided with varied LTH patterns — correlation is not a playbook.

Pair with flows

Combine holder stock metrics with exchange flows, miner treasuries, and derivatives positioning if you want a fuller picture. See also ETF flow context.
