New to all of this? Read Bitcoin for beginners first for the concepts. This page is the action steps.
- Pick a reputable on-ramp. Use a well-known, regulated exchange or broker in your country with a real track record and clear fees. Avoid obscure platforms and anything promising guaranteed returns.
- Secure your account. Use a strong, unique password and enable two-factor authentication with an authenticator app (not SMS, where possible).
- Verify your identity. Regulated platforms require ID verification (KYC). This is normal β follow the prompts.
- Fund your account. Deposit local currency via bank transfer or card. Note the fees and any holding period before you can withdraw crypto.
- Place a small buy order. Start with an amount you are comfortable learning with. Many beginners dollar-cost average β buying a fixed amount regularly β instead of timing the market.
- Withdraw to self-custody. Move your BTC off the exchange to a wallet you control, verifying the receive address. This is the step that turns "an IOU on an exchange" into Bitcoin you actually own.
Scams target beginners hardest. No legitimate service "doubles" your Bitcoin, and no one needs your seed phrase. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

- Set up storage: for anything beyond pocket money, follow how to set up a hardware wallet.
- Understand custody: the self-custody guide explains why "not your keys, not your coins" matters.
